Marcos Gondra hat-trick keeps Southern at bay in eight-goal cup tie

Marcos Gondra had to wait until the 87th minute to complete his hat-trick — and Eastern had to wait almost as long to be sure a three-goal lead would not slip away.

Eastern beat Kwoon Chung Southern 5–3 at Tai Po Sports Ground to book a Senior Shield semi-final against Tai Po, but a quarter-final that initially looked comfortable became a much closer contest.

Gondra scored twice in the opening 20 minutes, first from Yu Okubo’s assist and then from Alejandro Cova’s. Cova added Eastern’s third in the 27th minute.

Southern began their recovery just before the interval through Anson Wong. Stefan Pereira’s penalty in the 57th minute then reduced the gap to 3–2, turning a difficult afternoon into a live cup tie.

Eastern’s response was swift. Felipe Sá scored three minutes later, with Okubo supplying his second assist of the match, to restore a two-goal cushion.

Even that did not finish Southern. Balraj Landa made it 4–3 in the 80th minute, leaving them within one goal of drawing level again.

Gondra finally ended the uncertainty, finishing from Naveed’s assist with three minutes of normal time remaining. His third goal completed both the hat-trick and Eastern’s scoring in a game that produced eight goals and two separate Southern recoveries.
